About

I am very lucky to have left my country.

My whole life I’ve looked over my shoulders whenever I had something unfavorable to say about the government.

Living in Eritrea, I was also persecuted because of my faith. I attended prayer meetings, bible discussions and wedding sacraments in hiding.

Over the years, I witnessed as my childhood friends, my classmates and neighbors were picked up one by one and thrown into prison camps. Most of my friends, almost everyone I grew up with, are either refugees or prisoners in Eritrean labor camps. I don’t live in my country anymore.

“I am an enemy to any kind of slavery”

“I am an enemy to any kind of slavery, in all its shapes and colors” Woldeab Woldemariam, an Eritrean, wrote in a 1951 Eritrean newspaper. The 50′s was a time when my country, like much of Africa, was under an oppressive colonial rule, and yet we had independent newspapers and dissident voices. How far back Eritrea has gone under non-colonial oppressors!

“If only the best birds sang, the forest would be a quiet place”

In my blog, I try to put my thoughts into words as I struggle with ideas and try to make sense of the situation back home–much like Winston Smith of Ingsoc times. My aim is to understand, to explain and to inspire.

I invite you to explore my blogs and leave me a comment.

  1. People should be governed by their conscience not by evil regimes like the brutal PFDJ. This evil regime is never concerned by its people except by its dictator. Everything is concentrated around the brutal dictator. If he says one thing today everyone from top to bottom should repeat that phrase or song immediately. Otherwise he is done for.

  2. Sami, Good job I admire your work, and inspirations and effort toward your belief. I am mostly happy with your blogs. The idea that you generate are quit interesting and current issues, that people are not willing to raise their voices or hungry for it. That makes you efficient person for utilizing the freedom of speech you got from your current life. While others are still living under similar situation of their previous life. You are one of the hero fighting and voicing for the oppressed once looking for such help. Time will come your dreams will bear reality and happiness for ever, keep it up. May God give you the blessing ……
